Polish Cinema for Beginners

We are approaching the finale of the 8th season of Polish Cinema for Beginners – this Thursday we will reach the final destination in our tour around Poland with one of the most original and stylish films of the 21st century. For the closing film of this season focusing on Polish cities we have chosen Poznań based “Influenz” by Łukasz Barczyk.

Greater Poland Uprising – the only successful uprising in the history of Poland that resulted in the restoration of the Polish State after 123 years. The uprising begun with the visit of Ignacy Paderewski, a great pianist, to the Bazar Hotel. Dr Abuse, a clairvoyant (played by an American actor Crispin Glover also known from “Back to the future” “Charlie’s Angels” and “Wild at heart”) tries to stop him by making Paderewski believe he has symptoms of the Spanish flu, which between 1918 and 1919 killed more people than died in WWI. This is going to be a fight both of cannons and spirits. Łukasz Barczyk captures a legend of the uprising not only through historical reconstruction of events but also by looking into the world of phantasy, spirituality, and the general atmosphere of that period. Made for a tremendous amount of 25 Million PLN, the film dazzles with costumes, set design and special effects.

Organised since 2012 Polish Cinema for Beginners is a project designed for everyone interested in the history of Polish film. It is the first project in Wrocław and in all of Poland that has been created with the non-Polish speaking residents of the city in mind. Every screening and discussion is held in English, allowing all the residents of Wrocław, regardless of their nationality, to find out more about Polish culture, traditions and history.   During the previous seasons our audience watched films such as “Mother Joan of the Angels” by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, “How to be loved” by Wojciech Jerzy Has, “Man of Marble” by Andrzej Wajda and Borys Lankosz’s “Reverse” or Agnieszka Holland’s “In darkness”.

During the 8th season of Polish Cinema for Beginners we bring you closer the landscapes, history and unique characteristics of Polish cities
