On the 6th of October we will once again come back with Polish Cinema for Beginners project. This season, titled POLISH YOUTH, will present five films and focus on lives of young Polish people through decades. For the opening screening we have chosen The Illumination with a very special guest – the director of the film – Krzysztof Zanussi.

What is it like to be young in Poland? The seventh season PCfB will take a look at the hippy culture in the communist Poland in “Hunting for flies” by Andrzej Wajda (1969), the dilemmas of students in the 70’s in Krzysztof Zanussi’s “Illumination” (1973) as well the modern youth: a love triangle in “Floating skyscrapers” by Tomasz Wasilewski (2013) and a total destruction in Krzysztof Skonieczny’s “Hardcore Disco” (2014). We will also go back to the World War II in Jan Komasa’s super-production “Warsaw 44” to see Polish youth in the line of fire.

As always the whole project is run in English ensuring that all residents of Wrocław, regardless of their country of origin, could enjoy Polish films and with them learn about Polish culture, history and society. In the year of European Capital of Culture we have invited special guests: directors, actors and screenwriters. Get ready for wonderful films, interesting discussions and crazy parties.

Our first film of this season will be “The Illumination”, telling a story of  Franciszek, a physics student, who is doubting the choice of his life path. Looking for answers to the tormenting questions about the sense and the purpose of life, he talks to people of science, looks into the world of nature and religion. Will he finally achieve the illumination? The masterwork of Krzysztof Zanussi from 1972 is a generational film, which many young people in the 70’s identified with, while remaining timeless by asking universal questions. The main character is played by Stanisław Latałło, who died in a tragic accident in the Himalayas just a year after the film premiered. Illumination, which still captivates with its profoundness and philosophical approach, will be screened in a digitally restored version, with the director of the film as a very special guest.

The screening of “The Illumination” will take place of the 6th of October at 19:00 in Kino Nowe Horyzonty. Tickets can be purchased in the box office or onwww.kinonh.pl.
