We are only one week away from the third season of “Polish Cinema for Beginners”- a unique Polish film history course organised by Wrocław Film Foundation (Wrocławska Fundacja Filmowa). During this edition the audience will have an opportunity to see works of e.g Barbara Sass and Wiesław Saniewski.

Organised since 2012, Polish Cinema for Beginners has been, from the start, very popular among the public. It is a unique project – the first of its kind – both in Wrocław and all of Poland. It is designed primarily for the foreign residents of Wrocław, in order to present them with the masterpieces of Polish cinema with English subtitles. This project has not only entertainment values but also educational values and could be considered a sort of a course in Polish culture. All films are introduced by renowned experts- film critics, journalists, scholars and film makers and each screening is followed by an open discussion, inviting the multicultural audience to share their unique view poits, similar to a structure of a film society. Everything will be carried out in English.

For the screening opening the third season we have chosen “Ida” directed by Paweł Pawlikowski – one of the most important European productions of the past year, winner of festivals in Toronto, London and Gdynia. Polish candidate for an Oscar in 2014. Set in Poland in the 60s, the film tells the story of a young nun Ida, who, for the very first time in her life, meets her aunt Wanda. Together they embark on a journey, discovering the history of their family and their own identity. Our guest speaker is going to be Błażej Hrapkowicz, a film critic from Polish Radio, who will explain the historical context of the film and talk about its Polish and international success.

Screenings following “Ida” will take place every two weeks. During our second meeting, 13th of November, Monika Talarczyk-Gubała, the auther of Barbara Sass’ monograph “Everything about Eve” (Wszystko o Ewie), will talk about the film “Scream”, its director Barbara Sass and about Polish women cinema in general. On the 27th of NovemberWiesław Saniewski will take us backstage to talk about his film “Custody”, and the reception of his work in the 80s. For the finale of this season of Polish Cinema for Beginners we have selected “Suicide Room” directed by Jan Komasa. Here our guest speaker will be Samuel Nowak – media expert, LGBT activist and author of the book “Sexual capital” (Seksualny Kapitał), who will introduce the social context of the film.

All the meeting will be moderated by Adam Kruk, film expert and film critic, who is also responsible for this season’s programme.
