Only two screenings are left in this season of Polish Cinema for Beginners. After the meeting with films by Machulski, Wajda and Kieślowski in April the audience will have a chance to watch “In Darkness” by Agnieszka Holland and with Agnieszka Holland herself.

One of the most successful meetings of Polish Cinema for Beginners so far has been Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Ida” – on the 9th of April we will invite the audience to a screening of another Oscar nominee. “In Darkness” by Agnieszka Holland is based on the true story of a group of Jewish refugees, who after escaping a ghetto in Lvov, for months hid in the sewers, that stretch out under the whole city. With help comes Leopold Socha – sewer worker, petty thief and a chancer, who at first sees the Jewish people, who avoided the massacre as an opportunity to make easy money. No one would expect that when the right moment comes he will take any risk to protect them.
The audience will have a chance to discuss this war drama from 2011 with a very special guest – Agnieszka Holland. The director of the film, who accepted the invitation from Wrocławska Fundacja Filmowa, will share some insights about working on this movie and answer questions from the audience.
Polish Cinema for Beginners is a project organised fully in English, created for everyone interested in the history of Polish film. It is the first project in Wrocław and in all of Poland that is created directly for the non Polish speaking residents of the city, that also welcomes all movie enthusiasts. During the last three seasons our audience watched films such as “Mother Joan of the Angels” by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, “How to be loved” by Wojciech Jerzy Has, “Man of Marble” by Andrzej Wajda and Borys Lankosz’s “Reverse”
